YV Chardonnay

YV Chardonnay

2025 Chardonnay, Yarra Valley, Victoria

Very pale luminescent green color and brilliant in the glass. The wine opens up with a nose that is intensely floral with lifted citrus, citrus blossom, lemon zest, wet stones and sea spray. The palate is equally intense with a focussed core of lemon and lime, lemon curd, crunchy white peach and pithy grapefruit followed by hints of oyster shell and a fine slatey line. All is framed by delicate spicy oak and driven by fine talcy acidity.

  • Vintage Notes

The 2025 growing season finished as it started – very dry! Whilst our dams were full from a winter of average rainfall, the soil moisture content was lower than we’d seen after some unseasonably warm and dry weather during September and October. Budburst was the earliest that we had seen at Medhurst and the vines powered through the first growth phases with the warm Spring weather. We could see from the outset that bunch numbers were higher than in recent years and that the crop would be a strong one. An early flowering was followed by fantastic growing conditions and the vines were carefully managed to create an optimal canopy ensuring a perfectly ripe crop. The resulting fruit was some of the best we have seen with fabulous quality across all of our varieties. As usual, Vintage processing was an incredibly busy time, but the quality of the harvest has resulted in wines of a very special character that we look forward to seeing in bottle when the time is right. We are excited about what 2025 Vintage has in store!

  • Winemaking

Picked in the cool of the morning from 17th-19th February (a blend of Mendoza and I10V1 clones), the fruit was placed in the cool room overnight to maintain berry turgor and freshness and then pressed cold the following morning. The juice spent 24 hours in tank and was then transferred to barrel with full solids for primary fermentation. Partial MLF was undertaken and the wine spent 7 months in new (15%) and used oak before blending with full solids into tank.
