  • Vintage Notes

The 2023 growing season was the fourth cool season in a row. These 2020- 2023 La Nina seasons will be remembered for their challenges, but also the lovely elegant wines they have produced. Cool is one thing, but wet and humid is another. Extreme October-December rains and high humidity kept the vineyard team on it’s toes. Keeping the vineyard disease free and balanced during this period was the key to this wonderful vintage. From Jan-April we saw welcome dry periods with all fruit picked between March 10th and April 4th.

  • Vineyard Notes

The wine is 51% Pinot Noir and 49% Shiraz. The Shiraz component was picked from the Steep E block whilst the Pinot Noir was hand picked from the middle of our cooler C block.

  • Winemaking

In 2023 the wine is 51% Pinot Noir and 49% Shiraz. Both components were handpicked - the Shiraz from the steep F block whilst the Pinot Noir was taken from the middle of our cooler C block. All the Pinot and Shiraz were de-stemmed without crushing and layered into a single open fermenter. Co-fermentation is an important aspect of this wine style ensuring fabulous integration of these two great varieties. After a few days, indigenous fermentation commenced and the cap was managed with a combination of traditional pumpovers as well as delestage, the process of draining all of the liquid from the must into a seperate tank and pumping it back over the skins. Fermentation peaked at 28 degrees and carbonic maceration in the whole berries was high which extracted lovely florals and incredible red and blue fruit aromatics. After 10 days on skins the wine was pressed to old oak where it matured for 9 months before botting on 13th December, 2023
