Medhurst Estate Vineyard Rose 2020

2020

Medhurst

Estate Vineyard

Rose

Deliciously elusive fresh fruits including strawberry and raspberry are supported by white blossom of jasmine and citrus. Whilst this is a great wine to drink alone, we suggest great company and seafood are the perfect accompaniments.

The Season
The 2020 growing season began with a wet spring and later then average budburst. This inclement wet breezy spring weather led to poor flowering and set and from the outset we realized the crop would be well below the already low Medhurst average. A mild, dry December was followed by a showery January and February which enabled the fruit to ripen at a gentlemanly pace with picking commencing the first week of March. The resultant crop whilst small (40% below average), was of extremely high quality. The bunches were tight and compact, clean and of high flavour and importantly comprised of beautiful natural acids. The wines are looking bright, energetic and balanced. Once again we have made a beautiful early drinking dry Rose. The wines show excellent structure for medium term cellaring. A challenging season but the wines in bottle will be classy and powerful examples of our style.
Tasting Notes
Very pale copper with a bright vibrant pink hue. Deliciously elusive fresh fruits including strawberry and raspberry are supported by hints of fennel and white blossom of jasmine. The palate is savoury and refined with a supple creamy texture. The finish to the wine is superb, fresh fruits, lovely roundness and weight and a long chalky delicate line that is trademark of this single vineyard wine. Whilst this is a great wine to drink alone, we suggest great company and seafood are the perfect accompaniments.
Wine Making
This is a deliberate and considered Rosé, which starts from dedicated parts of the vineyard to ensure ripe flavours, fresh fruit and a trademark chalky fine finish. After hand-picking into 450kg bins, the fruit is placed overnight in a coolroom for the stalks to dry up, and the enzymatic reactions to slow down allowing a more gentle and pure extraction of juice at dawn the following day. Whole-bunch pressed grapes and yields less than 500 litres per tonne ensure delicate, pale and highly flavoured juice. Final blend was 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Shiraz. Fermented in stainless steel at moderate temperatures (up to 20 degrees) to enhance mouthfeel. Fruit driven, slippery, balanced and made with minimal intervention. Vegan friendly too!
