The Season
The 2021 growing season was a true roller coaster with a great result in the end ! It began with a wet spell and a later then average budburst. Thankfully the spring weather improved in November with mild dry and warm weather allowing for perfect flowering and set. From the outset we realized the yield would be excellent and the consistency of set indicated a great year ahead. This proved the case ! A mild, dry December was followed by a wet January which kept the vineyard team busy. However the weather changed again for the better with a warm (but not hot) February and only 4mm of rain ! This enabled the fruit to ripen at an even pace and we commenced picking in the third week of February. The bunches were of good size and weight with lovely intense fruit flavours and comprised of beautiful natural acids. The wines are looking bright, and energetic in their youth. The 2021 releases will have that lovely balance of fruit weight, complexity, line and length. An excellent vintage.
Tasting Notes
Brilliant crimson red, light to medium intensity promising a delightfully enchanting young Pinot Noir. Lovely nose, highly perfumed wine with red cherry, five spice, mint and floral notes dominating the aromas. The palate has a core of red fruit flavours and the mouthfeel is lithe and energetic. Superb drinking with slinky fine tannins and a clean, fruit-driven finish. A wine made for immediate consumption that will improve with careful cellaring over the medium term (3-5 years).
Wine Making
The 2021 Yarra Valley Pinot Noir is made entirely from Medhurst Estate fruit from 20 year old vines. All fruit was handpicked and immediately destemmed into small open fermenters for cold maceration. 10% of the fruit was kept as whole bunches and tipped directly on top of de-stemmed berries, with further berries on the top to enclose the bunches into the ferment. Once fermentations commenced, the cap was gently wet twice a day and remained on its skins for 12 days. At the completion of ferment, the wine was pressed to tank and then racked to French oak barrels (10% new) for malolactic fermentation. After 6 months in barrel, the blend was assembled and bottled on August 24th, 2021
Food Pairing
Perfectly paired with light meats, peking duck or some pecorino cheese.
