Medhurst Reserve Pinot Noir 2012

Pinot Noir

From a wonderful season, this is our inaugural release of the Reserve Pinot Noir. Selected from the most balanced and concentrated fruit found in the mid-slope (belly) of our front block of pinot noir, this particular section of the vineyard has a shallow grey clay loam soil profile, allowing the vines to produce compact and even pinot noir bunches. Perfect for making a reserve wine with complexity, length and balance. Looking great 8 years on.

The Season
A second consecutive La Niña season, with very high rainfall through the growing season, with 740mm recorded at the Medhurst vineyard for September 2011 - April 2012, with 478mm of that total falling during the last four months of 2011. Needless to say, the soil remained saturated for most of the spring, and barely dried out during summer. The heat summation of 1,432 degree days was higher than the average 1,348 degree days mainly due to the warm and dry January & February we experienced, which was welcomed to dry out the soil and temper the vegetative growth in the vineyard.
Tasting Notes
Bright ruby with a lovely crimson hue. The Medhurst Reserve Pinot Noir is a highly complex wine with plenty of red spicy fruit weaving through a fine framework of tannin and natural acid.
Wine Making
Hand-picked, the fruit was immediately destemmed into a small open fermenter for cold maceration. No yeast was used and once fermentation commenced, the cap was hand-plunged several times each day and remained on its skins for 30 days. At the completion of ferment, the wine was pressed to tank and then racked to a single French oak puncheon (500L) for malolactic fermentation. After 11 months in barrel, the puncheon was bottled on February 5th, 2013 without fining or filtration.
