The Season
The 2019 growing season began with a dry spring and later then average budburst. A small to medium sized crop was established in mild weather and 125mm of November rain came just at the right time to keep the vines healthy and vital. A warm, dry January-March with two short heat spikes kept the team on their toes. Detailed canopy management ensured the fruit remained unblemished by the heat of the sun. The resultant fruit was ripe, balanced and with exceptional acids adding to their vibrant fruit profiles. The wines are fine and approachable early with good prospects for medium term cellaring. An excellent season of vibrant and complex flavours, superb acidity and lovely soft tannins.
Tasting Notes
Very pale straw green, brilliant colour. Fresh and pure aromas of grapefruit, tropical fruits, varietal grassiness and spice. A wine with complexity but above all the flavour has intensity and a lovely weight. Superb balance. Drink now or cellar for up to 5-8 years.
Wine Making
After whole bunch pressing cloudy juice was filled to French oak barrels (15% new). Fermentation took place in the barrels over 20 days, temperatures ranging from 18-23 degrees celcius. The wine spent 5 months in oak before transferring to stainless steel. As a blend in tank, the wine spent a further month on full lees to build texture via yeast autolysis and to help retain the freshness seen in the grapes at harvest. Bottled August 28th 2019, 194 dozens produced. .
Food Pairing
Best drunk with freshly shucked coffin bay oysters within it's briny southern ocean shell.
